Some years ago (too many!) I got married and moved down to DC. I was working as a model in NYC  so we hired a designer to renovate an old home we bought.  Except…within a month I found myself doing a lot of the work, and was quickly offered a job by the designer we’d hired. To make a long, complicated story short – I ended up designing this big, old Virginia home on my own, having no previous experience. Instead of relaxing on our honeymoon I obsessively read a book on how to start a design business. And Marmalade Interiors was born.

Fast forward a bunch of years. Luke was born, we divorced, I moved out, but we lived a few minutes apart. Sadly last Christmas Luke’s dad passed away from brain cancer (some of you might have read it).  After sitting empty for a year – tomorrow this pretty old house will have a new owner.  They will move in to the house just the way I designed it years ago.

This weekend Luke and I got to have perhaps the sweetest farewell.

Chris, a filmmaker friend of mine, asked Luke to in one day write and direct a short film for a film festival. (He’s an avid writer and director at 11!).  Chris crew would film it, and make a short film of the making of the film and the location was Luke’s dad’s house.

A day that would have been difficult became a great memory instead.

I couldn’t think of a better farewell for Luke. Saying goodbye to the memories of his dad, while creating new memories for the future and having his first real film to show for it.

    He had a blast.

Since back then I didn’t design to “Live Like You” (mistake!) I designed around fantasies (crazy!!), the two stone walled rooms in the back look like a Medieval castle.

So in the story there had to be a king….

    King Bubba of Bubbaville.

And at last…all those medieval interiors MADE COMPLETE SENSE!

There is a reason for everything I guess, you just never know when that reason will show itself.

The old English crest in it’s glory.

A chair fit for king. (I always had a lot of imagination.)

Pretty old settee in faux zebra.

If you can’t tell I was influenced by Ralph Lauren and old European castles.

    It all made perfect sense.

This room was originally the stables that later turned in to an art studio, then the next family turned it in to a bright family room. And of course it was my turn and I made it a medieval billiard room. The house spoke to me I guess!

Luke gave a tour of the house. Some stuff was moved around.

Everything in the house tells a story. Not necessarily our story, but a beautiful story non the less. I always felt the house had to be designed a certain way because it deserved to. Sometimes you just can’t ignore the spirit of the house.

The back billiard room was for the day called the THRONE room in the story. It looked perfect with the smoke machine.

    We both got our farewells.

I of course took pictures of old designs I did (here in the guest house bath).

Luke took a walk on the land.

There is one thing constant in life and that is change.

We can look forward yet embrace our history and our experiences and aim to make the best memories we can.

This week marks a beginning of huge changes both personal and business.  The next blog post we will share our next big adventure.

Hope you will come along for the ride, share yours, and perhaps give us some good advice!

Just as I posted a couple of days ago, that I’m doing too much of this…sitting at my desk working on the computer…

…and then…sitting at my desk working on the computer some more…

I woke up yesterday morning in EXTREME PAIN and could not move my right arm.

    So I found myself here….

Thank God for Hilary Granat at CORE PHYSICAL THERAPY in DC.

Pinched nerve in my neck and inflamed rotator cuff. OUCH!!!  If it was not that I’m going on vacation and flying to Europe in a few days,  and it didn’t hurt like #$$%%&*&%%$,I might not be so concerned. Because a few weeks of treatment, ice and rest I know Hilary will have me good to go, like she did after a car accident two years ago.

If anyone of you have back pain, neck pain, as you know the computer can be your worst enemy.

But I will follow Hilary’s super short tips THAT I WILL RELIGIOUSLY FOLLOW from now on!! Promise. You might want to do this too!

Please share any good PT’s, chiropractors, massage therapist, acupuncturists in your town in comment section, or e-mail me, and I will add to post. It might just help someone in your home town!!

Here are some of my “saviors”.

It’s funny how our children turn out like us…

When Luke was a baby I was acting and writing scripts most of the time. Actually pretty obsessively, as that’s how I approach everything. (when I wasn’t designing of course…)  Perhaps it’s the time Luke spent on set years ago, that’s bringing on his new passion….film making

Luke on set with me in NYC 2003.

    This was today…..

Luke turned our house, as usual, in to his film set.

Luke and his friend Diego got wet, very wet….when filming this one.

And all of us had to pitch in to help…literally…

Dan behind the scenes helping out…. (that’s my office up there)

I filmed this particular scene, Luke had to edit out my laughter!!

If you have kids or know anyone under 14, invite them to watch. It’s pretty funny.

Click on the image it will lead you to Luke’s latest video, from Lukeapedia his You Tube channel.

    PRANK MASTER 1!!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL MOTHER’S OUT THERE!!

We’re back, we’re tired, but refreshed. Sometimes the most fun things are not preplanned….Well what better way to get over a hard time than doing something difficult….like swimming with sharks?  Or feed swimming pigs? Huh?

I have an annoying fear of deep water from watching JAWS at the wrong age. I started surfing to get over the water fear. However every time I’m in the ocean or a really large pool for that matter I hear the JAWS music…So how could I turn down an invite to swim with a bunch of wild but “friendly” sharks?  It was just too enticing, the sign was cool, the marina was charming….

I was all excited until I saw this —

    And this—

Would you take a swim here??

Luke and his friend had already gone for a swim and I was labeled a wimp.  We were told these were nurse sharks and they don’t really attack people, and they don’t have big giant teeth. The appeared pretty peaceful, yet I didn’t dig the one lurking right below me. Yikes!

Okay, so I’ll get back to the sharks at the bottom of blog post…..

We also went out to see something I would guess you’ve never seen…. yes SWIMMING PIGS!!

They live wild on an island in the Bahamas.

And as soon as they see your boat they come swimming out to you…

…hoping you’ve got some food with you.

    How cute are they???

Cute, yet I would not want to swim with them…

    They were giant!

Okay back to the shark swimming….

Luke had already snorkeled around the sharks.

    Now it was my turn…

    Because isn’t this inviting?

This is what they looked like when we threw in a piece of fish.

    A FEEDING FRENZY!!

Okay and I hate to let myself down by not taking a challenge.

So right before the sun set (you were not allowed to swim after dark) and when of course the camera battery went dead (not kidding)…

    It was now or never….

So since I was told I’m not part of their diet, I forced myself to take a swim. I did swim out 6 feet and QUICKLY back again!  Someone has it on video, which I have yet to get.

In fact the nurse sharks are peaceful creatures, they feel like slippery sandpaper when you touch them gently.

    Would you do this?
