You might remember the bachelor in New York who didn’t know what to do with his temporary rental. Well, that project is finally coming along.  The only clients I’m able to take on for the moment are people willing to let me create a “personality” on LiveLikeYou around them, and he was the perfect candidate.  So the “rental man”, will be dubbed the “DOWNTOWN MAN” on the site, and his pad is just starting to come together.

The cool mid century cabinets have come in, and his cool rock and roll art collection is ready to be hung. The over sized chrome lamps by Candace Olsen rock!

The color/design scheme which was inspired by a peacock and rock’n roll magazines, and then interpreted for a man with a stylish down town vibe is filled with blues, greens and wood tones.

The blue velvet couch which was the first purchase, now is next to an olive green velvet covered mid century shaped chair. We settled on a cool Madeline Weinrib cotton carpet instead of a Moroccan Beni Ouarain antique rug, since this apartment is a rental, and also gets high traffic.

He plays guitar and wears sneakers…all which inspires the interiors.

To save money and solve the design dilemma of annoying condo rules that say you need to paint walls white after you move, we’ve selected only one wall to be painted in the living room. (Who came up with these rules?? We all need some color in our lives!)  The wall with the TV credenza will be a nice blue since it’s facing the windows and gets lots of light.

It will get a shiny Bermuda blue, which picks up the bluish black print in the carpet. The custom vintage dining room set we had redone a while back adds some character.

    Remember this makeover post?

The green zig zag seat adds some spice to the corner of the living room.

For underneath we’re ordering this specialty cowhide.

A black and white cowhide splattered with silver paint. Pretty cool I think. Adds soft graphics,  and covers the floor which is not one of my favorites.

Then all the art work has to be hung!!

When you have limited wall space in your home, it’s a great idea is to create an art wall. First lay out all the pieces you have and see what works together…

Start with the largest piece in the middle.

I don’t belong to the group who believe all frames have to be the same color. You can match them via theme, or feel or mix and match as you would like. He had lots of existing art, so for this wall they all had black frames.

After you hang the first large print in the middle – move upward. I think it’s great to let it spread out, and I always love to make the ceiling feel higher.  Particularly in a rental place where the ceiling height is standard.

Here are six photographs on the wall.  This art wall can easily be added to on both sides.

For now it’s left like this. Sometimes I even like the relaxed look of art that’s just leaning.

I added one of the zig zag chairs here to flank the cabinet. I like how fabric softens the look, and also LOVE how the lamps and the fabric play together.

Again, just love those lamps, and they were such a steal!

Next up painting the living room wall, adding a cool mid century chrome coffee table, accessories and this place should be fit for the downtown man. Then of course on to the bedroom, kitchen and bathrooms.

Will bring you along if you don’t mind…as soon as more gets done!

I always forget to write this…but for daily design advice, inspiration images, great products, deals etc., follow me on FACEBOOK. I do several daily updates there!!

How many bachelors move in to a place and don’t know what to do next?  I think it’s perhaps not crazy to say a lot of men (NOT all) fret over what to do after the big screen TV is purchased, and a great mattress has been selected.  Perhaps there’s been a brief visit to Restoration Hardware or Crate & Barrel, but other than that for many bachelors that’s it. It’s very hard to know where to start, and life is busy — so many go on living without making any design decisions.

This kind of scenario makes me SO excited about the upcoming “e-decor” site LiveLikeYou!  It makes me able to deal with all the seriously unfortunate delays, and the sometimes nightmare maze through the world of web programming and development. I’m truly believe it will be a great aid in helping people live they way they dream of.

Perhaps you remember our first super nice test customer BRADHe moved in to a rental apartment…

Newly divorced, no furniture, no free time…

…and unsure about how to design his space. And also reluctant to spend any of his budget on a designer, because it was needed to purchase furniture.

    Enter LiveLikeYou.

On the site you’ll find personality and movie based interiors. For each personality there will be designs for 5-8 rooms in your house with everything you need to complete it.

In this case…Brad was THE MODERN BACHELOR, one of the first looks that will go on the site.

A rendering of the MODERN BACHELOR living room can be custom fit your space.  The design given can be personalized even more by the additional options available for each furniture item in your room. And you probably want to decide your budget?  You can select BUDGET and GREEN/VINTAGE options for each piece.

I’m obsessed with recycling furniture the aim is for it to be a vintage, custom vintage, antique or used item for all of the pieces suggested.

There’s a mood board for each main rendering for a room.

I always like to have mood board to print out. I like to look at it, and imagine it in my space when I design something. I’m hoping people feel the same way.

This is Brad’s living room now….

    Photography Geoffrey Hodgdon.

Original artwork by artist Josh Rosenthal is hanging above the sofa.  I’ve hand selected artists whose work inspires me to be sold on the site. I’m not a fan of “decorator art”, and I love giving an outlet for talented new and old artists to sell their work!

Brad’s opted not to paint the gray color selected for the room, as he is in a temporary rental and buildings can be quite tricky about that. But the existing color works fine.

He selected the additional option of two white garden stools and added his own zebra rug.

    Here’s a tiny peak at his bedroom….

The headboard is a Marmalade Design product which will pop up here and there in our rooms.

The best part of it all was Brad’s happiness as his place was coming together.  I can’t wait to have this site up and running.  Designs should be available to everyone to create an environment that enhances their life in every way..

…and you shouldn’t always have to pay for it!

I’m stepping in to solve another bachelor’s design dilemma. He finds himself in a situation many people in New York are in. He’s been wanting to buy a place for a long time. But prices in NYC are insane, the stock market is unstable, so a lot of potential home owners are doing just what he’s doing…waiting…and renting.

Here are some Iphone images I took. Most rentals in big buildings have pre painted linen white walls, which is the standard rental color, forget trim it all goes one monotone color. You’re allowed to paint the walls but you have to paint them back again when you move out.

Hmm…should you spend money doing that?

Time flies as we all know, and life goes by very quickly and you want to come home to a place that cheers you up. Yet you’re unsure how long you’ll be living there….

How much do you do spend to improve the place?

I’m going to follow this make over with before and afters on the blog. A lot of people ask me what to do when they’re renting a place. I think it’s an interesting dilemma. Most New Yorkers are used to renting, and used to sacrificing space to be able to live in this exciting city. This apartment is very sunny with good space, and has lots of windows, which is a great. Then again you’re going to need a lot of blinds…fit to size…And you can’t take those with you right?

A lot of issues to figure out and solve.

This bachelor is a business man, with an artistic side and passion for rock n’ roll. So I want to create a space that really represents who he is and makes him happy to come home to without spending a lot of money. He likes green, and blue, and is not afraid of colors… and dresses really well.

The ocean blue velvet couch from Plantation LA is the only previous purchase I helped him with a while back. So I’m taking my cue from that…. and I’m taking style cues from….

…a Peacock! I’m going to take all my color cues form this amazingly beautiful animal!

    And rock magazines….

…inexpensive mid century vintage pieces that can be reinvented…or stay as is…

    …NY designer Ryan Korban’s apartment….

    A couple of inspiration pictures….

    Design by Madeline Stuart.

I’m going to redesign lots of vintage stuff and search out great inexpensive buys from sites and store. I love to take on the challenge.

Got any great ideas for me?

Brad just relocated from London to DC.  He was moving  in to his new rental with only his clothes, TV and a Tempurpedic mattress.

    What to do?

    235611152c 722082750c

His busy new job gave him no time to buy furniture, and it wasn’t in his budget to hire a designer. And even if he did have time, he felt unsure how to go about it.  He had checked out some stuff at Restoration Hardware but wasn’t sure what his style really was.

Brad’s dilemma is a very common one, and of the reasons we’re launching LiveLikeYou. (We’re two weeks away!)  On LiveLikeYou you’ll find designs matched to personality types. You can walk through designed vignettes for every room in your house and buy everything you see. If we don’t have the right product, we’ll send you to someone who does.  Paint color selections are given, budget and green options, as well as design advice along the way. For a small fee you can even get a complete layout for your home in your selected look.

Even though not launched yet we asked Brad to be our first LiveLikeYou test client, with one demand–we would follow him on the blog.  After sifting through a bunch of masculine personality types he was surprised to see where he ended up.  Thinking his style might be French Country he ended up choosing  “The Modern Bachelor”. A stream lined classic modern look in black, tan, silver and espresso brown.

Brad selected a beautiful painting from one of the talented artists we’ll carry on LiveLikeYou.  This painting is by Josh Rosenthal, “Man in boat in Apartment”.  I personally dislike “decorator art” and I’m always looking for artists whose work I love.  (Know anyone great? E-mail us at: contact@marmaladeinteriors.com)

Below are two gorgeous images he selected from Christine Matthai.

    P.S.

When I left Brad’s I happened to stop and pet this sweet little dog. He had just been rescued from death row in a South Carolina shelter by the kind people of Lucky Dog Animal rescue.  He needed a home…so he now lives with us.  Lucky timing!   We’ve named him “Bubba”.
