This week is special for me since our annual Knock Out event is this Thursday.

18 years ago(!) this week my friend Cheryl Masri and I had a strong desire to do something to help women. At the time I had two friends who found themselves in severely abusive relationships.  One friend was thrown out of a car after being beaten so hard her husband broke his arm beating her, another one was locked in a closet after being beaten with a chair.  They were stories of violence I never thought imaginable. So Cheryl and I set out on a quest to rally women to help fund shelters for victims of domestic violence, women with no place to go when their lives were in danger. We wanted create an organization that gave women a place to join together in support of other women.

18 years later it’s a thriving non profit organization, and I’m so grateful to all the women and corporations who lend their support year after year. You are truly angels!!! Now (if you haven’t stopped reading yet because this is not about design…sorry) I want to share why we do this, and why LiveLikeYou donates 5% of all sales from GLAMOUR GIRL to Knock Out.

Here are some disturbing facts about domestic violence…

4 women a day are murdered in this country by their husband or boyfriend

1/3 of all emergency room visit by women are due to intimate partner violence

The number # 1 killer of an unborn child is the father of the child

Crazy statistics like this makes it impossible not to continue to donate time and effort.

Artist Shepard Fairey kindly donated this art as our new logo last year.

Every year we ask an amazing woman to be our chairwoman for our big event.

    Cheryl, Jaci and me.

This year’s chair is the wonderful Jaci Reid who has worked tirelessly for the cause.  Three years ago she suffered a stroke, lied passed out for two days in her apartment, before someone found her. She was given a 3% chance of survival and was paralyzed and unable to speak.  With her incredible efforts, hard work and determination she is back to normal and enjoying her life. She has taken that incredible spirit and given it to Knock Out for the last few months.

    Thank you JACI!!

This is a LiveLikeYou ad in the program on Thursday….it never hurts to be glamorous while supporting a cause….

5% of sales of all the Hollywood regency style items in the personality GLAMOUR GIRL on LiveLikeYou will be donated to Knock Out.

Daily life can sometimes feel really mundane. According to a study I just read, 8 hours of the average working woman’s day is spent on house hold chores like grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning, family management, childcare.
I think that’s why one of my favorite things in interiors is adding some glamorous touches.  It might sound shallow to some, but I think if we create a home that aid our imagination and removes us visually and emotionally from daily “mundaness” we might feel different.  When I created the first personality Glamour Girl on LiveLikeYou I had a specific character in mind. A woman who wanted some glamour in her home, with a dash of  Dorothy Draper, zebra and anything Hollywood Regency!

And with lots of PURPLE. A color that is said to inspire dreams and imagination.

So what can you do to add a glamorous touch to your home?

I started with a color scheme I thought was suitable to an old fashioned movie star, yet modern and graphic enough to be right for a bold person.

I wanted to create a home that had some drama, and was elegant yet friendly.  And the mood had to be kick started in the FOYER.  The space had to give you a strong feeling the second you enter.

I wanted a space that even though you arrive home stressed and tired from work you would instantly be engulfed by something glamorous and “magical”.

Things that create that for me is…..

    A big glittery chandelier

A mirror adds the soul to any room….

And of course a zebra carpet!

And I imagined a breakfast room that would work as a dining room as well.  A place that when you dine, even with the kids, you dine in style…

    Interior design in Erin Gates.

For our Glamour Girl’s dining room I wanted…

..it to feel like a 40′s movie star could live there. A space that would be perfect for both breakfast and dinner. But with the dark carpet it’s also okay for kids. It doesn’t show spills, and it’s easy to clean….

…and a Hollywood inspired chair with white leather, that despite it’s glamorous appearance is easy to wipe!

Some accessories that add instant elegance in any home…

    Greyhound ceramic dogs.

Another ultra glamorous thing you can do is to to your home is PAINT YOUR DOORS BLACK WITH WHITE TRIM. So Dorothy Draper!!

These fantastic doors (does anyone know source?) might be all you need to create a glam home.

Now what is the ultimate luxury for a woman? Yes, the CLOSET. We can all dream of a walk in closet. No matter how big or small the space it should be something special.

A glamorous girl should have a space to call her own.  This is a perfect room to paint the doors black.  Adding unexpected elegance in smaller spaces, might be the most glam of all.

To me her closet had to have….

…a chic chandelier. Add one in a closets, your bathroom, a small power rooms.

Again I know you can see your reflection in just any cheap mirror, but I LOVE adding glam Hollywood Regency inspired mirrors. This gilded chinese bamboo mirror will make your reflection even better.

And this bamboo mirror lends some elegant curves.

I think women often forget to pamper and take care of themselves, because they’re always taking care of everyone else!!

Perhaps with some glamorous touches you would feel pretty fab folding laundry and emptying the dishwasher?

    Who knows?

Some of you might wonder what’s going on with LiveLikeYou, our upcoming design and furniture site. Why these delays? It’s all done, it looks fantastic, but some areas of the site had to be reworked and we’ve been on hold for some time.  There is no site like this out there, so the programmers are working feverishly to follow my crazy(?) and ambitious plan. But instead of jumping off a cliff, we’ve been busy working on tons of great design ideas and have found some awesome products we can’t wait to share.  I really want to thank all of you who’ve sent encouraging e-mails looking forward to the site launching. IT MEANS A LOT! I promise you the wait will be worth it!  And if you haven’t already – join LiveLikeYou on Facebook and Twitter and sign up for our newsletter.

Here are just a tiny peak at a few bohemian, glamorous, cool products coming soon….

    Interior design: Angie Hranosvsky.

I love the relaxed glamor and bold colors in this image. Jenny (who works at LiveLikeYou), constantly reminds me of my obsession with zebra.   I’m happy to be able to include some of the variations of zebra print rugs on the site.

This gold and silver splattered zebra print is pretty cool I think, and one of many we’ll carry on LiveLikeYou.  I think it adds a bit of rock n’roll to a regular hide.

Retro glam light fixtures like this one, who can resist?  Can’t wait to share all of the awesome light fixtures. Both vintage and new.

Glamorous, earthy, bohemian all at once.

Zebra done in gold, another version of my beloved zebra print.

Great screens….an inexpensive way to add interest to a room.

Another relaxed earthy but super glam look.

Mid century inspired dining  table, also comes as a coffee table. Can’t wait to share the vintage versions…

    Disco balls in different variations….yeah.

Super glam mid century sideboards with antiqued mirrors. Love this one.

Dorothy Draper inspired, yet also slightly bohemian.

Lots of bold mirrors in many BOLD colors.

Chairs in bold colors by cool  furniture designers.

Oh, and don’t get me started on the beds.  So thrilled to be (I think) the first site carrying some of the coolest beds on the planet by a fantastic furniture designer.

You know what?  I better stop here because or this post would go on and on.

Because after all to be able to LiveLikeYou – you’ll have lots of different things and looks to choose from. LOTS!

Framing or outlining anything with black is something I’ve been a bit addicted to for a while.  It can be anything, a border on a carpet, a curtain, a shade,  a black and white geometric fabric, an shiny black entry door.  It just makes everything so instantly elegant and glamorous.  In rooms I would never have thought of adding black before I now want to add black.  I even find black walls elegant, and not only in restaurants and night clubs. It can feel surprisingly cool in your own home.

My number one addiction might be a simple white curtain framed by black ribbon. So instantly elegant and crisp.  Remove the black accents in this room and it would be a whole different feeling.

A black and white striped carpet is very dramatic and works great with any color. Here it’s chic with gray and white and wood.

    lonny

This image is from a store I’ve been to in Nolita in Manhattan.  This image is from Lonny Magazine.  SO chic! The floor is even painted in a nice zig zag pattern.  And that curtain would look great anywhere!

A black wall in a bedroom via Elements of Style feels very modern. It looks surprisingly great paired with an antique bed. How cool.

Love  the black velvet couch with white legs.   Another great black and white curtain.

I like even just adding a sisal with  black border in spaces.  It defines the area, gives it some elegance.  Great in a kitchen.  It works in traditional as well as modern interiors I think.

    BlackMoulding

Or in a bathroom with black molding via The Lettered Cottage.

Another addiction-black dramatic hotel bedding!!  Love this one by Hilary Thomas.

Black wicker. Elegant and instantly formal and cool.

Black and white might be an unexpected  color choice in a sun room/ porch. Looks great with sisal.
