Seeing something on the screen and translating it to an actual interior is tricky! When you shoot a movie there are often just backdrops, and occasional rooms that are being styled to create the perfect shot.  Talented set designers trick you in to believing a scene is part of the house, but it might just be a backdrop in a whole other shooting location.  So piecing together an actual design for a home from the movie Mamma Mia I had to take some serious artistic license! I imagined what it could look like, and I had to “clean” it up as the movie interiors were dreamy, but a bit too “shabby” to suit daily life.

So perhaps if you had  Greek Island home your entry would look like this…(this is today’s launch e-mail blast)

    MAMMA MIA ISLAND.

(Don’t forget to grab the discount code off the suitcase.)

Inside I’ve sourced a slew of products for the rooms that are not exactly what was in the movie but that gives you the same feeling.

    I studied the movie endlessly.

The set designer drew this original rendering of what they thought the master bedroom should look like. Pretty cool!

Then they set their idea in to action and created what we all fell in love with.

Here are some movie stills from the master bedroom.

Meryl Streep with her “daughter” in her lap.

Surrounded by lavender blue walls and a sea or red and white fabrics and carpets.

I had to come up with what the rest of the room looked like, and had to select furniture that would work and that I loved. So my rendering is a bit different…

It’s toned down. I created a design that can be used in a house, or apartment — not necessary a country house in the Greek Islands.

Here’s the movie set rendering for the kitchen…can you imagine what an amazing country kitchen they had planned?

    Original movie rendering

The kitchen appeared a few times in the movie….Remember Pierce Brosnan singing? And “Dancing Queen”?

    It had a beige/gold wall.

I reimagined it in a more modern setting. And selected some pieces that can easily fit anywhere in an eat in kitchen.

I’ve been wanting to interpret movie interiors with a usable guide for people to create in their homes for a long time.  I have a long line of TV shows and movie’s with interiors that left me swooning planned for LLY.

If you have a favorite movie interior or TV show set you love, please let me know!!

I saw a movie that I can’t get out of my head….well if I’m really honest I can’t get the interiors out of my head. Rarely have I seen an interior that I was so amused and intrigued by. If you haven’t seen the French movie “Coco & Igor” rent it this weekend, even if you just watch the interiors. I know..I’m BAD. When Coco brings the Russian conductor and his family out to stay at her country estate, they’re hoping to be greeted by warm country interiors. They are in shock when they approach her very graphic ONLY black and white country home…inside and out.

While Coco and Igor are falling in love, I’m falling in love with the doors! Everything in the house is severe and outlined in black. Just like a perfect Chanel jacket. White walls with black outlines, almost like a cartoon, yet terribly chic. I never thought to do an interiors like that before. But the problem is now I need a room like this.

Coco gets in to a hot and heavy affair with the married conductor. And I’m in love with the cool black and white wall patterns.

The wife is very upset! She’s sensing something is up..and her stupid guest room is only black and white!! She desperately tries to give it some color by hanging a scarf on the wall. Having no appreciation for Chanel’s outlined, defined interiors. I feel bad for her, but I’m busy checking out the cool mix of black and white patterns.

Coco lounges in the chic stair case that is so…Chanel. She designs like she dresses.

It doesn’t matter what room they’re trying to hide their affair in….the hallways, bathrooms you name it, all have a perfect black and white, perhaps tan pattern. The actors are excellent, the story interesting, but I really need to see the exact colors in this pattern.

They’re now hot and heavy. But the carpet steals the show. Where can I get one like that?

She is getting a bit tired of him now…. They’re in the bathroom, it’s white with…you guessed it, black borders and trim. She is mad. He doesn’t appreciate her as an “artist”, calls her a merchant. What a FOOL!!! Open your eyes philandering DUDE!! Only an artist would think these interiors up.

I love that door! Coco loves his piano playing. Good stay there for a while so I can check out the wall. No disrespect, but step to the right please so I can get a good look.

    Someone’s style transfers to interiors.

Perhaps she is the one? The one who inspired all the black and white graphics in design…?

Anyone seen Butterfield 8?  It’s one of those movies where the interiors are so amazing it distracts me from the story, and after a few minutes I find myself obsessively studying the background instead of listening to the dialogue. Doesn’t mean the movie is not great, everything is just so icy blue and white and “blingy” and chic in the apartment!

I love the perfect colors of her coats in the closet. Beige, ivory, pale gray and brown fur.  These colors would make a perfect room! I have to design a look on LiveLikeYou inspired by this film.  Below are some images that could be  a modern day version of this movie.

Saw a great movie this week – “It’s Complicated” by Nancy Meyer. Finally a movie with a woman over 40,  even over 50, actually 60(Yeah!) in a romantic lead role.  It’s about time! A radiant, amazing Meryl Streep in one of the funniest movies I’ve seen all year.  You’re not only enjoying the great script, with characters who are extremely funny and believable. For two hours you get to spend time in Meryl’s character’s sunny, charming Santa Barbara home.  I wanted to live in that house, be invited for dinner in the cool kitchen, eat her delicious looking food, then sit on one of those cushy slip covered chairs in front of the fireplace.

In Nancy Meyer’s movies, the home plays almost as big of a part in the movie as the main character.  Who doesn’t remember Diane Keaton’s gorgeous blue and white house in the Hamptons in “Something’s gotta give”, or the two homes you left dreaming about in the house swap movie “The Holiday”?    Meyer says “What the characters wear and how they live and decorate really say something about them”.

Set designer John Hutman and set decorator Beth Rubino, once again successfully collaborated with her. The result is a casually elegant Tuscan style home with Belgian influence, fit for a divorce’.  I found these stills from Traditional Home.

Meryl Streep had them add water damage on the kitchen wall, and had the kitchen made smaller to suit her character better. She got involved early on, and had special ideas who the character was and how she lived.

This is a great casual living room with linen curtains, sisal carpet and slip covered chairs.  John Hutman and Beth Rubino mixed high end furniture with antiques and some items from West Elm. The goal was to capture “the essence of Meryl’s character, a woman who marches to her own drum”.

How many times haven’t you been to a movie, and wished your home looked just like the great movie set?  On LiveLikeYou we’re going to have complete design guide with furniture, paint colors and everything else you need to create a home inspired by your favorite movie.

The color palette was inspired by Santa Barbara’s colors, and selected to suit Meryl’s light complexion. Muted earth tones with splashes of orange.
