Hearing daily about the terrible state of the economy is a bit alarming, particularly when you’re about to launch a business. I’ve spoken to many talented furniture designers and manufacturers who no longer can afford to carry inventory because of poor sales. Many companies are rethinking and altering their strategies.  I have many friends who are out of work or whose incomes are down.  I’m really curious to know… What are you doing differently with your business in this economy? Or with your home purchases?

It seems the one good thing to come out of a bad economy, is a sudden influx of great inexpensive designs.  Here are some of my favorite, chic deals of late. They look expensive but have a friendly price tag.

A elegant padded blue velvet headboard Nate Berkus for HSN $ 349.

Gilded bamboo coffee table for $ 279.95 by Nate Berkus for HSN.

Chic velvet slipper chair from Ba-Sofa $ 464

Safari settee $ 399 from Home decorators.

Reflective mirror cabinet $ 549.   This is very similar to one of my favorite designs from Worlds-Away that retails for $3000.

It also comes in an espresso finish.

    Chloe lamp Z Gallerie $ 99

Powder blue Parsons bookcase $ 249 from Home Decorators.

    Willow sofa Z Gallerie $ 999

Palisades mirrored cocktail table for $ 149.

Staircases have been on my mind lately.  When most of us think of them it’s generally just as a necessity and nothing else.  Ignoring the staircase and not looking at it as an opportunity to make a statement is a mistake I admit I’ve been guilty of.  Taking up so much space in a home – why should they be boring?

When I stayed with Jenny in Shelter Island this colorful staircase greeted me every time I would walk up to my attic bedroom.  How cheerful is that?  It’s a great way to set the stage for what’s to come.

Here is an elegant pale blue painted staircase via Apartment therapy. Painting a staircase is such an inexpensive way to add interest.

A simple, solid bold runner works really well.

A subtle color or a simple pattern can make the simplest staircase look incredibly elegant.

Pick up a color from something in the room, and paint on the stairs.

    A bold stripe or…

    …a pretty hue works wonders.

Check out what Camilla at High Heeled foot in the door did with her staircase. She ordered glue on decals from WallPops. Clever!!!

Perhaps a faux tile from Casart Coverings?

A classic staircase given some definition with a black bordered runner.

Or why not remind yourself every step you take of some of your great qualities?

In the last year I’ve almost completely left my acting days behind, not from lack of interest but design work and LiveLikeYou has simply taken over.  But since I missed an audition for the American version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” while in Sweden this summer, I’ve been kind of bummed.  Not only did they need someone Swedish, my age, (which never happens!!), but apparently I looked the part.  But Sweden was too way too far away…and I was busy working on the blog or painting a cabinet or something…?

Hey isn’t that more fun than playing Daniel Craig’s girlfriend???

So when I suddenly was asked to read for a guest part on the TV show “House” this morning in LA, I immediately booked a later flight and went to audition at Fox studios this morning. Luke is a huge “House” fan and said I just HAD to do this, so I brought him along.

“To be or not to be, I guess that is the question…?”

The process starts something like this…

You get a script that you can’t show anyone, in fact you can’t even read the sides for “your” character. They have one of your headshots. They had this one of mine from last year.

With great lighting and makeup, and a professional photographer they can work wonders.  But at 10am after a bad nights sleep…it’s a lot of pressure.  I was choking when I saw my Iphone snapshots from this morning. AAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!

I could at least have brushed my hair!!!

It’s truly a fantasy world on the Fox lot.

This was an empty back lot this morning.

The entrances are beautiful. Trees made to look like  horses!! But if movie making is magic, I guess it starts at the door….

Luke peeked in at the behind the scenes on some show.

    NOW LAST BUT NOT LEAST…

Congratulations to–Brad Berkely for leaving comment number # 26 which was chosen by random.org!!!!! He selected image # 5 from Christine Matthai. Lucky guy!!

NOW I CAN REALLY USE SOME LUCK!!! How fun it would be to blog behind the scenes of a show for a few days??

I’m back in LA for a few days for some final meetings with our web designer.  I can’t wait to show you a sneak peak at LiveLikeYou on the blog, but that will have to wait until next week…

I don’t know if it’s the lifestyle, climate or historical influence that inspires such great interiors out here.  While drinking your morning coffee this weekend you might want to browse some of these talented designer’s portfolios.

    Hilary Thomas

Another great designer – Jennifer Dyer.

Tamara Kaye-Honey also has  great store.

Then one of my all time favorites Besty Burnham.

Enjoy the last days of summer!!!
